SAN FRANCISCO, California, KARLSRUHE, GermanyムNovember 1, 1995:
theta group and dtF Americas, Inc. announced today The dtF Database Toolkit, an OpenDoc-based database frontending toolkit for consultants, VARs and end-users. A prerelease of the dtF Database Toolkit 1.0 is expected to ship at the same time as Apple Computer ships OpenDoc 1.0 for the Macintosh later this year. The final version of the dtF Database Toolkit 1.0 is expected in Q1/96.
The dtF Database toolkit will enable end-users to create documents containing data from relational databases in a simple, yet flexible and straightforward fashion by using standard OpenDoc techniques like linking and drag & drop. The different parts within the dtF Database toolkit can be integrated with any third-party parts and containers easily. The dtF Database Toolkit allows the integration of SQL-data with traditional dcouments like word-processing, spreadsheet, graphics or DTP-documents. It provides a suite of highly integrated, interacting OpenDoc parts to incorporate data from relational databases into major productivity applications supporting OpenDocェ. The dtF Database Toolkit allows the user to
・ Connect to SQL databases
・ Create relational database models
・ Create sophisticated queries without an intimate knowledge of SQL
・ Execute queries
・ Display the results of a query
・ Navigate through the results of a query
・ Manipulate the results of a query
・ Save documents containing relational data and view data offline
All parts are communicating via standard OpenDoc means and can be replaced by third-party parts at any time. All parts are able to link their contents to any other third-party parts to display QuickDraw-3D models, PICTs, QuickTime Movies derived from the host database or to visualize relational data with advanced charting or data analysis tools.
Database queries are created against a generic, logical database model and are not tied to any specific database system implementation. By simply replacing the database connection part, pre-built documents and queries can be used to access a variety of Macintosh-based and host database systems like dtF, 4D, FileMaker Pro, Oracle or Informix.
The dtF Database Toolkit viewers (capable of displaying all parts) are distributed freely. They are available free of charge from several ftp and WWW sites or by contacting dtF Americas, Inc. or theta group. The dtF Database Toolkit is expected to retail for $159 with database connection parts for dtF and FileMaker Pro. Additional database connection parts can be obtained for $49 each.
メThe importance of OpenDoc technology cannot be emphasized enoughモ commented Hans Martin Kern, VP, Product Management & Engineering of theta group "It will
enable developers to deliver new kinds of solutions and tools to the end-user,
with an amount of integration with other products which was not previously
possible. dtF is especially suitable for use within the OpenDoc environment and we intend to extend our technological leadership in this area even more with the dtF Database Toolkit.モ
メThe OpenDoc technology will allow dtF for the first time to create very
focused end-user products by concentrating on dtFs technological
strengths.モ stated Brenda DeVries, VP, Marketing & Sales of dtF Americas メThe dtF Database Toolkit provides a seamless integration of standalone and client/server SQL database access with OpenDoc.モ
The dtF database system provides a premier choice for developers who want to create high powered database centered applications with no performance trade-offs. dtF features native PowerPC, SQL, binary large objects, full transaction control, error recovery, client server architecture and multi-platform support. dtF allows a developer to use his favorite tools to provide the best user interface possible including HyperCard, SuperCard, SmalltalkAgents, DataScript/ AppleScript, Peregrine, MacApp, TCL, PowerPlant etc. dtF is fully integrated with AppleScript through DataScriptェ for dtF provided by General Knowledge. dtF is also an integral part of Peregrine, the innovative client/server development system from Pictorius, Inc.
